Belzoni/ Egypt study day, Bristol
Date: 22nd Nov 2008
Venue: Bristol City Museum & Art Gallery, Queen’s Road, Bristol, BS8 1RL
November 22, 2008
10:00 am to 4:30 pm
To be held at the Bristol City Museum & Art Gallery, Queen’s Road, Bristol, BS8 1RL on Saturday 22nd November 2008. This study day will focus on Belzoni and his 1817 discovery of the tomb of Sety I (reigned c. 1290-1279 BC) in the Valley of the Kings, including the images of the tomb produced by Belzoni and Alessandro Ricci now in the collection at Bristol’s City Museum and Art Gallery, which formed part of the scale model exhibited at the Egyptian Hall, Piccadilly, London, in 1821.
In the morning Sue Giles, Curator of Foreign Archaeology at Bristol’s Museum & Art Gallery, will give the background to the Belzoni material in Bristol’s collection; Dr Aidan Dodson from the University of Bristol’s Department of Archaeology & Anthropology will then place the tomb of Sety I in the context of the Valley of the Kings, followed by Peter Clayton talking about Belzoni himself, illustrated by medallions commemorating his achievements.
In the afternoon Aidan will focus on the interior of Sety I’s tomb, illustrated by Belzoni’s and Ricci’s watercolours and by the photographs of Harry Burton and others. Harry Metcalfe, paper conservator at Bristol’s Museum & Art Gallery, will finish the day by describing the conservation work recently carried out on the watercolours. In addition, some of the watercolours and medallions will be on view for closer study.
Cost: £25 per head for the whole day or £12.50 for half day (either morning or afternoon) which includes coffee/tea and biscuits during the morning and afternoon
