THE MYSTERIES OF THE ROSETTA STONE
Unlocking the mysteries of the Ancient World
The British Museum in London is filled with many remarkable antiquities from ancient Egypt. But there is one treasure that is more valuable than all the others, it's a large unassuming stone tablet known as the Rosetta Stone and it forever changed our belief in mankind's past.
Thousands of years of ancient glorious Egypt remained a mystery to the world, locked in the Egyptian language of hieroglyphs, in 1779, a cryptic black asphalt tablet was accidentally discovered in a town called Rosetta by a soldier of Napoleon's armies. This tablet held the key to deciphering hieroglyphs as carved on its dusty surface were three types of writing; Greek, a common Egyptian script called demonic and hieroglyphs. Most importantly all three scripts said the same thing.
However, The Rosetta Stone remained undecipherable for over twenty years until 1822, when a young obsessed French scholar, Jean Francois Champollion, broke the code and opened the door to Egypt's past.
This is the magical story of the struggle to decipher The Rosetta Stone and the secrets and splendors of ancient Egypt it revealed.
